Kate Hudson Grew Up Feeling Abandoned by Her Dad — Years Later, He Said She Was ‘Dead to Me’

Goldie Hawn’s daughter grew up surrounded by Hollywood glamour, famous faces and extraordinary privilege.

But behind the photographs of a seemingly perfect celebrity family was a wound that Kate Hudson would carry for decades.

Her biological father was musician Bill Hudson, a member of the 1970s group the Hudson Brothers. Yet as Kate and her older brother Oliver grew up, they came to regard another man as the father who was truly there for them: Goldie Hawn’s longtime partner, Kurt Russell.

The family divide eventually became painfully public.

Years later, after Oliver posted a brutal Father’s Day message accusing Bill of abandonment, their biological father fired back with words that stunned fans.

He said both Oliver and Kate were effectively “dead to me.”

But that wasn’t the end of the story.

Kate went on to become an Oscar-nominated Hollywood star, Oliver built a successful acting career of his own, and Kurt remained a central figure in the family they built around themselves.

And in a surprising development years after that very public feud, there have been signs that the relationship with Bill may finally be changing.

Before Kate Hudson was famous, there was Goldie Hawn and Bill Hudson

Bill Hudson was already making a name for himself before becoming connected to one of Hollywood’s most famous families.

Alongside his brothers Mark and Brett, he performed as part of the Hudson Brothers, a Portland-born pop-rock group that enjoyed its biggest period of fame during the 1970s.

The group released records, scored charting songs such as So You Are a Star, and became television personalities through programs including The Hudson Brothers Show and The Hudson Brothers Razzle Dazzle Show. Bill also moved into acting and film work, including the cult comedy Hysterical.

Goldie, meanwhile, had already emerged as one of Hollywood’s brightest stars.

The two became romantically involved during the mid-1970s and married in 1976.

That same year, their first child, Oliver Hudson, was born.

Oliver’s birth nearly ended in tragedy

Oliver’s arrival was far from routine.

He has since spoken publicly about suffering meconium aspiration during his birth, a serious complication that can occur when a newborn inhales fluid containing meconium into the lungs.

In a 2025 episode of the Sibling Revelry podcast, Oliver recalled that he “almost died” from the complication. Goldie has also described the frightening period surrounding his birth and the uncertainty over whether her newborn son would survive.

Oliver eventually recovered.

Three years later, on April 19, 1979, Goldie and Bill welcomed their daughter, Kate Garry Hudson.

Few could have predicted that the little girl born into this complicated Hollywood family would eventually become an internationally recognized actress.

Goldie and Bill’s marriage falls apart

Goldie and Bill’s relationship did not last.

Bill has given his own strongly worded account of why the marriage deteriorated, including claims about disagreements over fidelity and what each of them expected from marriage. Those allegations represent Bill’s version of events, rather than independently established facts about what happened inside the marriage.

What is clear is that the relationship broke down, and Goldie and Bill eventually divorced in 1982.

Kate was still only a small child.

For both her and Oliver, the breakup would have consequences that lasted far longer than their parents’ marriage.

Then Kurt Russell entered their lives

Goldie Hawn had actually met Kurt Russell many years earlier.

The two worked on Disney’s The One and Only, Genuine, Original Family Band when they were young performers. They did not become a couple then.

They reconnected while working on Swing Shift in 1983, and this time the relationship became romantic. They have remained together ever since, despite choosing not to marry.

By then, both had children from previous relationships.

Goldie had Oliver and Kate.

Kurt had his son Boston Russell, from his marriage to Season Hubley.

Kate and Oliver have recalled the major adjustment involved in suddenly becoming part of a blended family. But one thing eventually became clear: Kurt wasn’t simply their mother’s boyfriend.

He was becoming their parent.

Goldie later explained that watching Kurt interact naturally with her children helped deepen her feelings for him.

In 1986, Goldie and Kurt welcomed their son Wyatt Russell, completing a blended family that would become one of Hollywood’s most recognizable.

Kate says Bill was there at first — then gradually disappeared

The story is more complicated than saying Bill was never present.

Kate herself has explained that her biological father was around when she and Oliver were very young, but that his presence gradually diminished.

Speaking about the experience in 2016, she said the relationship “sort of teetered out.” She has also acknowledged the emotional pain that can come from feeling abandoned by a parent.

At the same time, Kate has been careful not to reduce the entire situation to simple hatred.

She has spoken about forgiveness and about recognizing that her father’s own issues were his to live with.

For Kate and Oliver, however, Kurt was the man consistently present during their childhood.

That distinction became central to the way they talked about fatherhood as adults.

“My Pa stepped in”

Oliver has repeatedly expressed his affection for Kurt Russell, whom he and Kate commonly call “Pa.”

Kate has done the same.

The relationship wasn’t simply a Hollywood stepfamily arrangement. Kurt became the man associated with birthdays, childhood milestones, discipline, support and day-to-day parenting.

Kate once famously contrasted that relationship with her experience of Bill, explaining that what mattered to her was having a father who actually showed up.

That bond has continued well into adulthood, with Kurt remaining closely involved with the Hudson siblings and their children.

Meanwhile, Kate was becoming a star

As the complicated family story continued away from the cameras, Kate began building a career that would eventually make her even more famous than the Hudson name already was.

Her breakthrough came with Cameron Crowe’s Almost Famous, released in 2000.

Playing the unforgettable Penny Lane, Kate became one of the most talked-about young actresses in Hollywood.

Her performance earned her an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress and a Golden Globe win.

She followed that success with films including How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, The Skeleton Key, Fool’s Gold, Bride Wars, Nine, Deepwater Horizon and Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery.

And decades after Almost Famous, Hudson proved that her early acclaim had not been a one-time moment.

At the 2026 Academy Awards, she earned another Oscar nomination — this time for Best Actress for her performance in Song Sung Blue.

The achievement meant that approximately 25 years separated her first and second Academy Award nominations.

For a woman whose childhood had included such uncertainty over one of the most fundamental relationships in her life, her professional story had become one of remarkable longevity.

The Father’s Day post that blew everything open

For years, much of the Hudson family’s pain remained something they discussed primarily through interviews.

Then came Father’s Day 2015.

Oliver posted an old photograph showing himself and Kate as children with Bill.

His caption was only a few words:

“Happy abandonment day…”

The post went viral and transformed a private family wound into an international celebrity story.

Bill was furious.

He told the media that Oliver could have contacted him privately rather than publishing the message publicly.

Then came his most devastating response.

Speaking about Oliver and Kate, Bill said:

“He is dead to me now. As is Kate.”

He also said that he was mourning them even though they were still alive and called Oliver’s post a deliberate attack.

The wording generated headlines around the world.

And for anyone hoping the family might quickly reconcile, it seemed to slam the door shut.

Kate responded differently

Although Kate shared many of Oliver’s complicated feelings about their father, she took a noticeably different public approach.

She spoke increasingly about forgiveness.

Rather than insisting that nothing painful had happened, Kate acknowledged the absence while also suggesting that continuing to carry anger would not improve her life.

She said she understood that whatever issues Bill was dealing with were ultimately his own.

That perspective became especially significant as Kate became a parent herself.

She now has three children and has frequently discussed the importance of blended families and maintaining meaningful relationships around children even when romantic partnerships change.

In many ways, the family she created reflects lessons drawn from the one in which she grew up.

Goldie and Kurt built something that lasted

Another striking part of Kate’s story is what happened to Goldie and Kurt.

Hollywood relationships are notorious for collapsing under fame, pressure and endless public attention.

Yet the couple who began dating in 1983 are still together more than four decades later.

They never married.

Instead, both have repeatedly explained that they choose to remain together because the relationship continues to work for them rather than because a legal document requires it.

Their children are grown now.

Their family has expanded to include spouses, partners and grandchildren.

And photographs of Goldie, Kurt, Kate and Oliver together decades later offer a very different image from the painful abandonment narrative that defined so many headlines about Bill.

But the story didn’t actually end with “dead to me”

This is the part older versions of the story often miss.

For years, the bitter comments from 2015 were treated as the final chapter between Bill and his eldest children.

They weren’t.

In 2024, Kate revealed that although she still didn’t really have a relationship with her biological father, things were “warming up.”

She added that she had no expectations about what their future relationship needed to become and simply wanted him to be happy.

Bill echoed that optimism soon afterward, saying the family’s rift appeared to be healing and that they were trying not to spend their time relitigating everything that had gone wrong.

Then came an even more significant development.

In 2025, Oliver revealed that he and Bill had become far more regularly connected, saying they were communicating frequently and had developed a relationship that would have seemed almost impossible immediately after the infamous 2015 Father’s Day explosion.

That doesn’t erase the childhood hurt.

It doesn’t rewrite the years of estrangement.

And it doesn’t change the enormous place Kurt Russell occupies in Kate and Oliver’s lives.

But it does make the family’s story more complicated — and perhaps more hopeful — than the old headlines suggested.

Kate Hudson’s story became much bigger than her childhood

Kate Hudson could easily have spent her entire career being introduced simply as Goldie Hawn’s daughter.

Instead, she built an identity of her own.

She became an Academy Award-nominated actress, a Golden Globe winner and, eventually, a musician as well.

In 2024, she released her debut album Glorious, pursuing a musical ambition she had carried for years.

Then Song Sung Blue brought her another wave of acclaim and a second Oscar nomination in 2026.

Her father, ironically, had begun his own career in music decades earlier.

Their shared creative DNA is one of the quieter threads running through a relationship defined publicly for so long by absence and resentment.

A family story that is still being written

The easiest version of Kate Hudson’s story has always been dramatic:

A famous musician’s daughter feels abandoned.

Another man steps in.

She becomes a Hollywood star.

Her biological father eventually declares her “dead to me.”

But real families rarely fit that neatly into a headline.

Kate has never denied what the absence meant to her.

Oliver once expressed that hurt in one of the most memorable celebrity Father’s Day posts ever published.

Bill responded with extraordinary anger.

And Kurt Russell undeniably became the father figure Kate and Oliver relied upon.

Yet years later, the family has also shown that relationships people once believed were permanently destroyed can sometimes shift.

Kate has spoken about forgiveness.

Bill has spoken about healing.

Oliver has reconnected with him.

No one appears to be pretending that the painful years never happened.

But the latest public comments suggest that the door once slammed shut during their bitter feud is no longer completely closed.

For Kate Hudson, perhaps that is the most unexpected chapter of all.
