Kai Trump Reveals Emotional Reaction After Grandpa Donald Trump Was Shot: “We Got a Little Teary-Eyed”

For millions of Americans, the images from Donald Trump’s July 13, 2024 campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, were unforgettable.

But for Kai Trump, the event was something far more personal.

She wasn’t simply watching a former president and presidential candidate survive an assassination attempt. She was watching her grandfather come frighteningly close to losing his life.

Days later, when Kai finally saw Donald Trump in person again at the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee, the reunion became one of the most emotional moments the two had shared.

Speaking afterward about seeing him for the first time since the shooting, Kai revealed that both of them became emotional.

“We both got a bit teary-eyed. I’ll never forget that,” she recalled.

It was a revealing glimpse into a relationship that, away from political rallies and television cameras, Kai describes much more simply: a granddaughter and her grandfather.

And since that dramatic summer of 2024, Kai’s own life has changed considerably.

What happened to Donald Trump in Butler, Pennsylvania?

On July 13, 2024, Donald Trump was addressing supporters at an outdoor campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, when shots suddenly rang out.

Trump reached toward his right ear and dropped behind the podium as U.S. Secret Service agents rushed onto the stage and surrounded him.

The FBI later confirmed that Trump had been struck in the ear by a bullet fired by the gunman. The bureau identified the shooter as 20-year-old Thomas Matthew Crooks of Bethel Park, Pennsylvania.

The attack had far more tragic consequences for others attending the rally.

Fifty-year-old Corey Comperatore was killed. Pennsylvania State Police said David Dutch and James Copenhaver were also shot and injured.

Crooks was subsequently killed by a Secret Service counter-sniper.

One of the defining photographs of the 2024 presidential campaign was taken moments later as Trump, surrounded by agents and with blood visible near his ear, raised his fist toward the crowd before being escorted from the stage.

For the Trump family, however, what millions experienced through television broadcasts and social media was a terrifying family emergency.

And for Kai, it made the next time she saw her grandfather particularly emotional.

Kai Trump saw her grandfather again at the RNC

Only four days after the Butler attack, Kai Trump stepped onto one of the biggest political stages in America.

On July 17, 2024, the then-17-year-old appeared at the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee alongside her father, Donald Trump Jr.

It was Kai’s first major political speech.

But behind the television cameras and convention atmosphere was another significant detail: the RNC was also the first time she had personally seen her grandfather since the shooting.

Kai later discussed that moment while playing golf with YouTube creator Grant Horvat.

She said the RNC had been particularly meaningful because it came immediately after the attack and because she had not seen Trump since it happened.

When grandfather and granddaughter were finally reunited, emotions surfaced.

That private detail added another layer to an appearance that most viewers had seen only as Kai’s introduction to national politics.

Kai showed Americans a different side of Donald Trump

Kai’s convention speech focused less on Donald Trump the politician and more on Donald Trump the grandfather.

“To me, he’s just a normal grandpa,” she told the audience.

She described someone who checks on his grandchildren, asks about their schoolwork and even gives them candy and soda when their parents are not watching.

Kai also recalled how proud he had been when she performed well academically.

Her speech was intended to show a side of Trump that she believed the public rarely saw.

NPR reported that Trump smiled as his granddaughter delivered the personal remarks from the convention stage.

The timing made the appearance more poignant.

Just days earlier, the family had been confronted with the possibility that their grandfather, father and relative might not survive an assassination attempt.

Now Kai was standing before thousands of delegates talking about ordinary family moments—school grades, snacks and conversations between a grandfather and granddaughter.

Their bond has also been built on golf

Politics may be what made the Trump name internationally famous, but one of the strongest connections between Kai and her grandfather has little to do with elections.

It is golf.

Kai has spent years developing as a competitive golfer, and she has frequently played with her grandfather.

According to Kai, those family rounds are not casual games where Grandpa automatically lets his granddaughter win.

Quite the opposite.

She has joked that Donald Trump tries to distract her and get inside her head during close matches.

In her interview with Grant Horvat, Kai described one particularly memorable round when she needed to make an eight-foot birdie putt while playing against her grandfather.

Trump attempted to increase the pressure.

Kai made the putt anyway.

What she remembered most was not simply winning the hole but seeing how happy her grandfather looked afterward, despite being on the losing side.

The Independent reported that Kai said Trump still usually wins many of their matches, although their games can be competitive.

Golf therefore became more than a sport for the pair.

It gave them something separate from campaigns, speeches and public life—a shared activity through which their relationship could develop.

The Butler investigation later found major security failures

The July 2024 shooting also triggered extensive investigations into how an armed attacker managed to obtain a clear line of sight toward a former president protected by the Secret Service.

A bipartisan House task force ultimately concluded that the attack was preventable.

Its final report, released in December 2024, identified failures in planning, execution and leadership and made 37 recommendations relating to presidential protection and security procedures.

Investigators found that the nearby American Glass Research building complex had not been adequately secured, creating vulnerabilities that allowed Crooks to reach a rooftop and fire toward the rally stage.

Those findings provided a fuller institutional picture of what happened that afternoon.

But they also underline why Kai’s reaction was so emotional.

The danger her family witnessed on television was not hypothetical. One attendee lost his life, two others were wounded, and Trump himself was struck.

For a granddaughter waiting to see her grandfather again, the political questions surrounding the incident would naturally have been secondary to knowing that he was alive.

Where is Kai Trump now? A major 2026 update

Kai Trump’s life has moved forward considerably since the emotional events of 2024.

Born on May 12, 2007, she is now 19 and is pursuing golf at the collegiate level.

The University of Miami officially lists Kai as a freshman on its 2026-27 women’s golf roster.

Her university biography notes experience competing on the Srixon Medalist Tour, AJGA and South Florida PGA circuits, along with multiple strong finishes in Florida junior tournaments.

Miami officially announced in November 2025 that Kai had signed as part of its incoming golf class. She joined Bella Dovhey and Carlee Rogers in the program’s recruiting group.

The Hurricanes entered the 2026-27 season ranked No. 21 in Golf Channel’s preseason rankings, with Kai among the freshmen added to the roster.

It is a significant development from the teenager Americans first saw standing at the RNC podium.

Rather than immediately pursuing a political career of her own, Kai has increasingly built a public identity around golf, college life and social media.

And the sport continues to connect her with her grandfather.

Why Kai Trump’s reaction continues to resonate

Political families often appear before the public in carefully arranged moments: conventions, rallies, campaigns and formal events.

But Kai Trump’s description of seeing her grandfather after the Butler shooting was different.

There was no complicated political message behind saying they both became emotional.

It was simply a granddaughter remembering the moment she finally saw someone she loved after watching him survive a shooting.

That helps explain why the story attracted so much attention.

Whatever Americans think about Donald Trump politically, the reaction of a teenager worried about her grandfather is something many families can understand.

The Butler attack would go on to become one of the most consequential moments of the 2024 election campaign. Investigators would examine the shooter, the security failures and the decisions made by law enforcement.

Kai remembered something much smaller.

Seeing her grandpa again.

And getting a little teary-eyed.

More than two years later, as she begins a new chapter as a University of Miami golfer, that reunion remains one of the moments she has said she will never forget.
