A man carrying ammunition and allegedly monitoring security preparations was arrested at President Donald Trump’s California golf course just two days before Trump arrived for a major Republican fundraising dinner.
The arrest at Trump National Golf Club Los Angeles has attracted national attention after investigators reportedly discovered a loaded handgun, an allegedly illegal modified rifle, body armor, high-capacity magazines and notebooks containing what authorities described as “concerning statements.”
However, officials have not publicly accused the suspect of planning an attack on Trump, and no motive has been announced.
Man allegedly photographed security preparations
Federal agents were conducting a security assessment at the Rancho Palos Verdes golf course on Friday, July 31, ahead of Trump’s scheduled visit.
According to authorities, 38-year-old Jeanine John Taele was seen walking around the course while wearing an earpiece and taking photographs and videos of the agents’ activities.
Taele reportedly left the property but returned on Sunday, August 2—two days before Trump was expected to attend a Republican National Committee fundraising dinner at the venue.
This time, authorities say, Taele approached federal agents and claimed that he worked for the U.S. State Department and was there as part of a security detail.
Investigators said that claim was false.
Taele also allegedly told agents that he had a loaded firearm inside his vehicle. Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies detained him and searched his pickup truck, which was parked at the golf club.
Loaded pistol and ammunition reportedly discovered
Authorities said Taele had a 16-round magazine containing ammunition in his pocket when he was detained.
Inside his vehicle, investigators reportedly found:
- A loaded 9mm pistol
- Additional ammunition
- Binoculars
- A badge reading “security protection agent”
The combination of the firearm, ammunition, surveillance equipment and alleged false claim about being part of the official security operation immediately raised concerns.
Patrick Grandy, the assistant director in charge of the FBI’s Los Angeles office, said Taele’s behavior at the golf course only days before the president’s arrival created serious warning signs for investigators.
Search of home uncovered more weapons
The investigation expanded the following day when law enforcement officers searched Taele’s home in Downey, California.
Authorities said they recovered several firearms, ammunition, magazines and body armor from the property.
Among the weapons was an AR-style firearm that investigators allege had been illegally modified. A federal criminal complaint reportedly states that its barrel had been shortened from approximately 14 inches to 10 inches.
Investigators also found notebooks containing what federal authorities called “concerning statements.” Officials have not disclosed what was written in those notebooks, making it impossible to determine publicly whether the material related to Trump, the fundraiser or another subject.
Suspect faces state and federal charges
Taele has been charged federally with possessing an unregistered short-barreled rifle.
He also faces state allegations that include possession of a short-barreled rifle or shotgun, possession involving a large-capacity magazine and carrying a concealed firearm in a vehicle.
Authorities said he was additionally charged with second-degree robbery in connection with a separate, unrelated investigation.
Taele pleaded not guilty to the state charges. A judge set bail at $250,000 and ordered him to stay away from the Trump golf course and not possess firearms.
As with all criminal cases, the charges are allegations. Taele is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
Former Marine also worked in private security
Military records cited by the Associated Press identify Taele as a former U.S. Marine corporal who served from 2008 until 2016.
He was deployed to Iraq in 2008 and Afghanistan in 2010 and received several commendations during his service, including an award for good conduct.
California records also indicate that Taele has worked as a licensed security guard. Authorities have reported that some of his previous permits to carry a firearm while working in security had been canceled, suspended or allowed to expire.
Investigators have not publicly explained why Taele allegedly claimed to be working with the State Department or why he was recording the federal security assessment.
Trump attended fundraiser after arrest
Trump visited the golf course on Tuesday, August 4, for the planned fundraising dinner.
The arrest occurred before his arrival, and officials did not announce any credible continuing threat to the president or the general public.
Trump later briefly addressed the situation during an interview, saying the attention brought him some comfort because he viewed it as a consequence of being an important president.
